Menopause, Ageing, and Finding Your Glow Again
Share
Menopause isn’t something we often chat about over coffee, but maybe we should. It’s a stage of life that every woman will go through, and while it’s perfectly natural, the changes it brings (especially to our skin) can feel anything but easy. I know this personally, and I also see it every day in the women who walk through my clinic door.
What’s Happening to Our Skin?
As our estrogen levels drop, our skin starts to lose some of its natural support system. Collagen and elastin, those wonderful proteins that keep skin plump and firm, begin to decline. In fact, during the first few years of menopause, collagen can decrease by up to 30%. That’s why fine lines, sagging, and dryness seem to appear almost overnight - not a fun wake-up-call.
You might also notice skin that feels thinner, more sensitive, or suddenly more prone to pigmentation. Some women even find breakouts creeping back in, thanks to shifting hormones. Did we not pay enough of our dues in our teenage years?! It’s a lot to process, especially when we already feel like our bodies are changing in so many other ways.
How These Changes Affect How We Feel
Ageing itself is one thing, but ageing during menopause often feels different and, honestly? Confusing. The changes can feel faster, more unpredictable, and at times, unfair. And, for me at least, it’s not just about what we see in the mirror. Dry or uncomfortable skin can knock our confidence, and sometimes it feels like the face looking back at us doesn’t quite match the person we still feel we are inside.
What We Can Do About It
Now, we can’t stop menopause, it’s a part of life (one of it’s more challenging parts but a part nonetheless). But what we can do is take steps to support our skin and give it the extra care it needs during this transition. That’s where a consistent, thoughtful routine and in-clinic treatments can make such a difference.
At home, it’s all about choosing products that give your skin the extra support it needs right now. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides help lock in hydration, while retinol and peptides work quietly in the background to stimulate collagen and strengthen the skin over time. Adding a brightening ingredient such as vitamin C can help even out tone and restore some of that lost radiance. And, of course, daily SPF is non-negotiable—protection really is the best prevention.
In the clinic, the focus shifts to giving your skin that deeper level of care. Treatments such as Polynucleotides can make a real difference with some of the changes brought on by menopause, working to regenerate skin cells, increase collagen production, boost hydration, and improve elasticity. The result is skin that feels firmer, smoother, and more radiant. Profhilo is another powerful option, targeting hydration and elasticity while also stimulating both collagen and elastin production to restore strength and bounce. And for skin that feels particularly tight, dry, or uncomfortable, targeted hydration therapies are a wonderful way to replenish moisture and leave the complexion calm, nourished, and refreshed.
Why It Helps
These treatments aren’t about pretending menopause isn’t happening. They’re about helping you feel comfortable in your own skin again - hydrated, supported, and a little more like yourself. Sometimes, that hour in the treatment room isn’t just skincare, it’s self-care. It’s taking back a bit of control and walking out with your head a little higher.
Does menopause change our skin? Yes. But it doesn’t have to take away our ability to feel confident, vibrant, and beautiful. With the right support, both at home and in the clinic, you can navigate this stage with grace, and maybe even find a new appreciation for your skin and everything it’s carried you through!
My emails/DM’s/whatsapps etc are always open if you want someone to help you navigate through this new stage - because I am right there with you!
Always, Sarah x
