My semi permanent makeup journey
To say that this career choice was easy would be an absolute lie! Looking back on the early days to where I am now I do feel like I have come a long way, personally & professionally.
So let’s start at the beginning...
I always had an interest in the beauty industry, I just didn’t know how I could make a difference and for it to be beauty related. So I started a beauty course when I was 16 fresh out of secondary school. I was learning how to do treatments such as manicures, pedicures & massage. My favorite part of college was that we all got to practice on each other so there I was, getting a massage on a Tuesday afternoon! Not much fun when it was our waxing lesson though!
I absolutely loved college and qualified with City & Guilds levels 2 & 3 qualifications and off I went into the beauty world. I started in a nail salon in Hertford called Fingertips, which was such an eye opener for me as the girls in there worked their butts off every day and produced beautiful nails for all the clients and that showed through their loyalty. It was whilst working here at Fingertips that I decided to go to London College of Fashion to study Spa Management. I wanted to be a salon owner at the time so I knew just that extra qualification would help me to learn how to run a successful business in the future.
After London College of Fashion I worked for some fabulous companies such as Harrods & Clarins in their head office in London, which to this day I still miss, but that was because the people were fantastic and whilst at Clarins I met one of my best friends
Now I am not going to lie, the day when I finally decided to go self employed was not a good day, I wasn’t getting on where I was with a big supermarket company and I had enough and decided to quit! This isn’t my usual attitude towards work, but I had hit an all time low and something had to change. So a week later I got a bank loan and booked my training in the world of semi permanent makeup.
This was when my real journey had begun...
There is so much to learn with semi permanent makeup that you never really stop learning and being a student. There are always advanced techniques to learn and to keep your work up to date & meeting the current trends. This aspect of the industry really appeals to me as I always love to learn and improving my work and being better in everything I do. As well as this there is also the fact that I can impact someone’s life massively by giving them a new set of brows, so I knew I had found my calling.
Fast-forward a year or five and I am now a semi permanent & Microblading specialist with a clinic in the heart of St Albans. I had been given an amazing opportunity to become an assistant trainer with Nouveau Contour and Karen Betts who trained me, which for me was like doing a whole 360 being on the other side of the intensive training courses, I felt this made me a much better technician too.
So there’s a little about me and how I came to be a permanent makeup technician, it didn’t come easy, training is expensive and I have put a lot of blood sweat & tears into my business, but it has been so worth it as now I have more job satisfaction that I could of ever wished for.
